November Update

Training Update

FDR Course

October enrolments were right on the monthly average for 2023 and above average compared to previous years for enrolments on our FDR course with students from a variety of backgrounds with pre-requisites for enrolment including Law, Psychology, Social Sciences and experience working in a dispute resolution environment.

We’ve also had another completion in October. Congratulations:

– Temika Slee from Queensland

I know we have a few other students chasing the end of the year so hope we’ll have more completions to report in early December.

December is a half month as far as live role plays and  webinars with our official end the year Friday 15th November.

While Joanne is away in November the team will be continuing to run FDR focused events on Tuesdays, Orientation and catch up sessions on Mondays and the more general Q&A sessions on Thursday.

The best way to see what is on is join the Mi Students Group in the Mi Mediators Network – you need to be a member of that group to see member only events in the events feed  – Mi Students Group Join Link

The CHC81115 – Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution is a post graduate level qualification and has pre-requisite requirements.  We took a snapshot of the pre-requisites that current students had in December 2021 and again in September 2023 and noticed some interesting trends compared with a look at all graduates going back several years.

Happy Birthday Mediation Institute!

According to my AI bot (and the ABS) 70% of businesses in Australia fail before they reach their 10th Birthday.

Our 10th Birthday was on the 8th October so it is great to know that Mediation Institute is one of the 30% of businesses still strong and growing after reaching this milestone.

We were recognised as state finalists of the 2023 Telstra Best of Business Awards and believe me they do a thorough job of going through your business and processes. Highly recommended if you want to benchmark how you are going compared to other businesses across the spectrum.

We have such an awesome team of employees, contractors and collaborators who share our vision which is to train and support dispute resolution professionals to prevent violence and abuse.

NMAS Course

October was another above average month for NMAS enrolments compared to previous years and this years average monthly enrolments in our NMAS course.

If you haven’t participated in one of the consultation sessions regarding the NMAS Review there are more coming up in November.

The changes to the system are open for consultation currently – visit the Mediator Standards Board website to find out more about what is proposed. NMAS Review (msb.org.au)

Congratulations to the students who completed this month.  Some have gone on to the FDR course while others are intending on working in other areas as a mediator.

If you have not made it to one of the live sessions I’m running or one of the other MSB board members are running there is a recording of an overview of the proposed changes here – Goodbye NMAS, Hello AMDRAS (mediationinstitute.edu.au)

Congratulations Joanne Law

10th International Peace Conference: Nairobi, Kenya

Our Director, Joanne Law is busily packing ready for her trip to Kenya to attend the Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI) 10th International Peace Congress.

The theme of Identity, Belonging, and Migration is particularly relevant taking into account the wars and violence that is occurring in the middle east and other parts of the world.

FGC Course

The October FGC course had a diverse group of participants from as far away as British Columbia, Western Australia, Tasmania and NSW all coming together to learn more about facilitating family led decision making.

While Family Group Conferencing is mainly used in the child protection area it has many other applications and we would love to see greater use of family led decision making in family dispute resolution where there are cultural or practical reasons why more family members than the mother and father should be involved in developing a parenting plan.

The next workshops will be in February but you can join the course and complete the online learning prior to that.
