What is the Practicum?

The Practicum Certificate is an advanced skills development program and an approved pathway course for mediators seeking Advanced Mediator accreditation under the Australian Mediator and Dispute Resolution Accreditation Standards (AMDRAS).

The emphasis is on applied learning: reflective practice, case analysis, and constructive peer feedback to support high-level practice.

Pre-requisites

  • You are currently accredited as a mediator under AMDRAS.
  • You have been nationally accredited for a minimum of 4 years (two renewal cycles).
  • You have completed at least 150 hours of mediation practice (evidence required).
  • Your case study relates to facilitative mediation and aligns with the AMDRAS Standards (not Family Dispute Resolution).

Delivery and timeframes

  • 12 hours of live engagement (online or in person).
  • Completion required within 2 months of commencement.
  • Online participants require a computer, reliable internet, and camera/audio.

Course structure and outcomes

Course overview

  • Practicum portfolio submission: Case study demonstrating skills, ethical reasoning and reflective practice.
  • Case presentation: Minimum 30 minutes presented for structured peer discussion.
  • Reflective journal: 800–1000 words identifying learning insights and development goals.
  • Advanced skills refresh: Managing complexity and common mediation challenges.
  • Cultural and ethical considerations: Working effectively with diverse and vulnerable parties.

What you submit

  • One facilitative mediation case study (de-identified) presented to the group.
  • Reflective practice journal (800–1000 words).
  • Practice evidence showing at least 150 hours of mediation work.

  • Outcome recorded as Satisfactory / Not satisfactory.
  • Successful participants receive the Practicum Certificate.

Frequently asked questions

What evidence of eligibility is required?

You need evidence of at least 150 hours of professional mediation practice since first accreditation. Examples can include work history, de-identified practice logs, or other practice records.

Do I have to attend all live sessions?

Yes. AMDRAS specifies 12 hours of live sessions (online or in person). There is no self-paced option.

Can the Practicum be delivered in person?

In-person delivery can be arranged for organisations or local groups and generally proceeds based on expressions of interest. A minimum cohort size may apply.
