There are no prerequisites to enrol in this unit, making it a good first step for people interested in becoming a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.

  • If you are completing a law degree or other Bachelor or higher qualification and want to get started now
  • If you are completing mediation training, assessment and accreditation and want to start FDR studies as well

A practical way to test your capacity for higher-level study before committing to the full graduate diploma.

Note: Studying individual units is not a pathway to the full qualification. To receive the CHC81115, all prerequisite requirements must be completed first.

  • Registered FDR practitioners seeking a refresher and updated knowledge
  • Intake officers and practitioners working with families in or alongside the family law system

If you are not already an FDR practitioner or working in an allied environment, we will discuss suitability with you before you enrol.

Delivery and timing

  • This course is delivered through online learning.
  • You can undertake the course and assessment for competence from anywhere in Australia.
  • You can complete the course outside Australia if you want to update your knowledge of the Australian family law system.
  • Nominal duration is 75 hours (2024 Victorian Purchasing Guide).
  • We schedule the course to be completed within 30 days of the close date for enrolment (course groups close mid-month).

Skills development

You will develop your ability to apply knowledge in real-life scenarios through case studies, discussions, and the use of documentation and systems.

Assessment (Statement of Attainment pathway only)

Knowledge is demonstrated through quizzes, written tasks, case study, and a portfolio of completed documents and tasks. Workplace evidence may be used where relevant, and alternative evidence may be proposed.

During the course you will demonstrate competence in role plays and simulations and then apply them in the workplace. If completing this unit as a stand-alone course, it is acceptable for all assessment to be completed in a simulated environment that simulates workplace conditions.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to determine and respond to family law requirements, work collaboratively within the family law system, and contribute to improved work practices linked to family law.

Performance evidence (expand/collapse)

There must be evidence that the candidate has:

  • Correctly applied family law to at least 5 different client situations (including needs relating to domestic and family violence/safety, finance, property, children, relationship conflict)
  • Demonstrated effective use of systems and processes, documentation, reporting, and collaboration with others in the system
  • Developed appropriate responses to at least 5 different legal or ethical dilemmas in the family law context
  • Identified and analysed at least 3 work practices in terms of how they meet family law responsibilities and what improvements could be made

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You can propose alternative assessment evidence if you have evidence from the workplace that you believe demonstrates your skills and knowledge.

As this unit is offered as a course there is no discount for RPL if you also want access to the course materials.
