NMAS Accredited Mediator

Are you Eligible for this course?

Eligibility Criteria and Evidence of meeting the eligibility requirements are required:

  • you are NMAS accredited or lapsed very recently (less than 2 months)
  • you are not NMAS accredited but completed eligible training recently – there is a list of recognised NMAS standard trainers however we can evaluate an international course or Australian delivered course for eligibility. It must have sufficient practical skills training (role plays) so mediation modules in law courses generally do not qualify as the training is below the necessary standard.
  • you are not NMAS accredited but completed mediation training at some point in the past and are working as a mediator. This generally applies to FDR practitioners or mediators working for an agency or tribunal who did not require you to be NMAS accredited in the past but have raised their standard for their mediators to require NMAS Accreditation.

Delivery Model

Mediation Institute provides this training and assessment by eLearning.

That means that students can undertake the course and be assessed for NMAS Accreditation from anywhere in Australia (or the world).

The course is self-paced allowing you to complete the course at your preferred pace.

Theory – you can refresh yourself via online learning which includes recorded and live webinars discussing different aspects of the skills and knowledge you require to be a mediator.  The content is roughly eighteen hours of online information, videos and so on. You can participate in as much or as little as you would like.

Skills refreshment is  facilitated by live mentored video mediation role plays with our NMAS students. You will be mentored by a qualified NMAS Accredited Mediator and then able to book in for a practice then your assessment role play.

Course Duration

The course takes a minimum of 6 hours if you need both role plays to demonstrate competence.

You can spend as long as you would like reviewing the eLearning materials and recorded tutorials and role plays.

This course includes a minimum of three live role plays:

  1. a role play as a client (you can do more),
  2. a practice assessment (if you are assessed as competent you don’t have to do the second)
  3. a final assessment.

We also recommend doing an observation using the assessment before your assessment role plays so you can familiarise yourself with the requirements.

You will participation in a minimum of one live video mediation role play as a client but you can do more if you would like.

If you need to be re-assessed for NMAS Re-Accreditation please enrol and do this as soon as you realise you don’t meet the requirements. You should complete the re-assessment within 2 months of your renewal date. The opportunity does not remain open indefinitely.

Our NMAS Course Mentors and Assessors

No need for travel expenses

You can refresh your knowledge and skills and then be assessed through video mediation online.

Do you have the tech?

If you have a laptop or a computer with a web camera and a headset you have the tech you need. We don't recommend using a smart phone or tablet for facilitating mediation as the mediator.

No need to take time off work

You can start at any time and complete the course at your own pace. The role plays and assessments can be after hours or even on Saturdays if that works best for you.

Do you have the time?

We deliver training with total flexibility. If you can find 2 hours at a time for role plays you can do this refresher course. We recommend you do a practice as a client, an observation with the assessment tool and then your one or two role plays as a mediator. 6 - 8 hours plus any time you put into the course work to refresh yourself.

Course Content you will have access to includes:

As a professional mediator it is important that you can see beyond the behaviour of the parties and understand the underlying dynamic of conflict.

There is a predictable course of escalation that can be observed and strategies to de-escalate.

With this knowledge and appropriate strategies we have a greater likelihood that we can assist our clients to de-escalate and negotiate peace in their relationship or resolve their issues.

There are five major styles that people adopt when faced with conflict. During the course you will have the opportunity to identify your preferred conflict style.

You will also learn strategies to help clients to move from conflict styles that do not encourage reaching a fair and equitable resolution towards the styles that support collaboration and compromise.

The NMAS Accreditation Course requires that the graduate is competent in facilitative mediation.

The course will teach you the process in an easy to remember three stage / 9 step process.

Mediators require a number of specialist communication skills. Some are used in other professions however there are some distinctions in how they are used. Advocates, such as lawyers, and those who work in an advisory or counselling role, have to adjust their style when working as a mediator.  Key Skills are:

  • Active Listening
  • Acknowledging
  • Reframes, Mirroring and the use of summaries
  • Transition statements
  • Empathetic and neutral facilitation

The course will clarify the legal and ethical obligations that mediators have.

This includes common law convention, duty of care, human rights and other obligations as well as the standards established in the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS)

Dealing with:

  • power imbalances
  • emotional responses
  • cross-cultural factors
  • high conflict personalities and more

Mediation Institute offers this course via eLearning with skills development via video mediation. We do this for two reasons.

  1. To make the course flexible, accessible and lower cost than having to provide a workshop venue and travel.
  2. We want to equip our students to be mediators in the 21st Century where we believe that video mediation will become more and more popular and expected by clients and employers.

If you don’t want to learn how to facilitate Video Mediation it will be best that you find a training provider who does not share our vision for the future and can offer you a face to face alternative.

The best way to find out more about the course is to ring our Director of Studies, Joanne Law.

Joanne will answer any questions that you have about any aspect of the course or your re-accreditation requirements.

Call 1300 781 533 to get through to Joanne or her work mobile 0401 293 500

If you are nervous about the video mediation or unsure if your internet connection or computer are able to cope we can arrange for a video meeting to find out.
